What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate Marketing is all about selling other people’s stuff. Essentially it is a joint venture between a website owner and an online merchant where the website owner places advertisements or links on their website that help sell the merchant’s products or services. The links to the merchant website have an ID that identifies the affiliate in question and so the merchant knows who they are and in exchange for the sale or lead will pay the affiliate a previously determined amount of money.
As you might imagine the affiliates who are good at building successful well optimised websites that drive the right quality of traffic to the merchants can do extremely well and make excellent money. In fact the Internet is full of stories of affiliates who make vast amounts of money with seemingly very little effort. Wouldn’t that be nice if it were true!
In truth success as an affiliate is possible given hard work and as long as you accept that there is a learning curve. Not everything you try will work and so you have to be determined and aim at discovering a process that works for you. When you do so it’s simply a case of wash, rinse and repeat.

There are also considerable benefits for the merchants too as marketing through affiliates gives them an opportunity to get in touch with successful Internet marketers who really know what they are doing. They remove the risk to the affiliate by carrying the stock and shipping it out to the customer but in return they get a boost to their sales effort without any substantial marketing cost.
Whilst there are potential benefits for all the parties involved there are also a few pitfalls to be aware of. Firstly the merchant does need to be a little cautious, they may be happy to share their profits with reputable affiliates but need to pick them carefully as they do not want affiliates using unsavoury methods to bring customers to their website. They do not want to be having to run a damage limitation exercise to protect their brand!
Affiliates also need to make sure they do thorough research on the merchants before signing up for affiliation. Make sure that you will get an account manager who will give you the support you need and with whom you can build a successful relationship.
You also need to check out their payment terms. Most operate on ‘net 30’ which is 30 days following the end of the month but some try to insist on ‘net 60’. This is a long time especially is you are relying on PPC advertising and need to fund the campaigns.
